The government said it will not pay teachers for days spent on strike and urged unions to channel their grievances through the technical tripartite council of the social and economic pact.
Public Service Minister Abdoulaye Mbodou Mbami made the statement on Friday, February 20, 2026, alongside Education Minister Aboubakar Assidick Choroma.
Authorities said the provincial section of the Teachers’ Union (SET) in N’Djamena launched the strike without ‘following legal procedures‘. They added that salary delays did not trigger the work stoppage.
“The technical tripartite council is the only appropriate framework for submitting grievances,” Mbami said.
The council brings together employers, government officials and workers’ representatives. About 30 trade unions have joined the mechanism thus far.
The government recalled that it adopted Decree No. 2850 in November 2025 to revise teachers’ status. A joint commission is expected to conclude discussions by April 3, 2026.
