President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno has called for national unity, political dialogue and stronger governance in a message marking Chad’s 66th Independence Day.
In his address on Monday, August 10, Mahamat Deby said Chad’s future depends on its ability to remain united despite differences.
A nation does not become great through the size of its territory, but through the unity of its people.
He also called for greater political inclusion.
President Mahamat Deby said political differences should not lead to hostility.
Political opponents are not enemies.
He urged political leaders to favour consensus and include parties that remain outside the political process.
The President also linked peace to social and economic development.
There is no development without social peace.
He said improving living conditions remains the main priority of his mandate. He cited education, health, water, electricity and basic infrastructure.
Focus on governance
Mahamat Deby also called for greater accountability from state officials.
He said he would increase unannounced visits and that sanctions would follow where necessary.
He also renewed his commitment to decentralisation. The government, he said, must give local authorities more powers and resources.
On public finances, the President issued a strong warning against corruption and misuse of state resources.
Every franc of public money belongs to the Chadian people.
He said public funds must help build schools, health centres, roads and water and energy infrastructure.
Every public expenditure must be useful. Every project must produce visible results for our citizens.
Economy and young people
Mahamat Deby also called for a more diversified economy.
He said oil remains important but cannot be Chad’s only source of development.
Oil remains an important driver of our development, but it cannot be our only horizon.
He identified water, energy, digital development and infrastructure as key areas for the country.
The President also placed young people at the centre of his message.
You are not only the future of Chad. You are already its present.
He said the government would continue to invest in education, training, employment and entrepreneurship.
The President ended his message with a call for unity, peace and patriotism.
Patriotism is not only a feeling. It is a behaviour.
He said citizens should respect the Republic, protect the common good and work honestly for future generations.
